As part of our commitment to social impact and digital transformation, we developed the South African Waste Pickers Registration System (SAWPRS) in partnership with the South African Waste Pickers Association (SAWPA). This national platform was created to formally register and support waste pickers — an essential but historically informal workforce in South Africa's recycling economy.
The system brings visibility and structure to the informal recycling sector by capturing accurate, verified data on thousands of reclaimers across all nine provinces. SAWPRS enables improved access to support services, fosters collaboration with municipalities, and helps ensure waste pickers are recognized as key contributors to environmental sustainability, economic inclusion, and the circular economy.
SAWPRS is a secure, web-based registration system that allows for real-time tracking of registered waste pickers, including demographic and operational data. With over 8,000 waste pickers currently registered, the platform helps municipalities, NGOs, and stakeholders better understand and support the role of reclaimers in waste diversion, recycling, and local economies.
By enabling formal recognition of reclaimers, SAWPRS improves access to municipal support, waste management zones, and opportunities for inclusion in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiatives. The platform not only supports better policy development but also plays a critical role in ensuring that waste pickers are acknowledged for their contributions to environmental justice and poverty alleviation.

In support of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment's EPR regulations, we partnered with the PRO Alliance to ensure that major producers like Coca-Cola take responsibility for the waste they create. These regulations require companies to buy back a portion of the packaging and plastic materials they introduce to the market, promoting sustainability through accountability and resource recovery.
This initiative not only supports environmental goals, but also provides direct economic benefits to waste pickers who collect and sort recyclable materials. Incentives are paid to reclaimers as part of a broader strategy to formalize their role in the recycling chain.
